The following biographical sketch was provided by Richard's daughter, Jane Henshaw Smith:
Richard was a self taught Marine Engineer. He was the inventor of the hydraulic pilot house which is built into tow boats up and down the Mississippi River. His work was renown and towboat owners always knew they had a superior product when 'Dick' designed them. He was with American Bridge Company of Ohio then moved to Nashville Bridge Company, Nashville, TN where he worked for over 20 years.
Richard was inflicted with Polio at the age of 17. He used full leg braces and crutches for 63 years. He never allowed his disability to govern his life. He built fine furniture, finished an attic in his house in Nashville (all while sitting down) and he designed a hydraulic lift to enable him to reach ceilings, etc. while working on it.
Later in life he moved to Greenville, MS to help 3 other businessmen establish Greenville Shipbuilding. They once told him they would not start the business unless Dick agreed to come on board as their engineer. He designed PT boats during WW2, off shore drilling supply vessels, dry-docks, locks, small bridges, barges, towboats and other marine equipment.
He retired at the age of 70. He was born in Erie County, NY to Hoyt and Lillian Gurnsey Henshaw. He is buried at the foot of his parents at Griffins Mills NY.
