Luther never married, as he felt an obligation to care for his widowed mother, Nancy.¹⁶³

On Sep 12 1918 Luther Lafayette Hinshaw, age 42, registered for the World War I draft in Mississippi County, Missouri. He declared he was born Aug 29 1876, and was then residing in Hickman, Fulton County, Kentucky where he was a self-employed farmer. He declared his nearest relative was Nancy Laincy [unclear] Hinshaw of Hickman, Kentucky. He was recorded as 5' 11" tall, medium build, brown eyes, brown hair.^a

After brother Oscar died, Luther took in Oscar's widow Lela and their children to live on the family farm along the Mississippi river.¹⁶³

Luther Lafayette Hinshaw died Sep 14 1960, Mississippi County, Missouri; buried IOOF Cemetery, Charleston, Mississippi County, Missouri.^163,b
