Ellen's obituary was published in the "Jackson Citizen Patriot" (Jackson, Michigan) on June 13, 2002:2
PAYNE, ELLEN M. 76, of Homer, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. She was born July 31, 1925 in Albion Township to John D. and Viola P. (Avery) Henshaw. Ellen was a homemaker and also an Avon representative for many years. On September 18, 1943 she married Norman Payne and he survives. She was a 1942 graduate of Homer High School and member of Stella Chapter #140 Eastern Star. She enjoyed her grandchildren, sports events, gardening and was very supportive of her community. Survivors include two daughters, Sue and Bill Timmins, Sandi and Kevyn VanWert; son, Michael and Kathy Payne, all of Homer; sister, Mildred Allen of Hudson, MI; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents. Funeral service will be held Friday, June 14, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive, Albion, with the Reverend Don Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Homer Public Library Memorial Fund.
