Charles was an artist living in New York City.7,8  Julia had been studying art with Charles Melville Dewey before they married.  Julia maintained a studio at 222 West 23rd St., New York City.1  

Julia exhibited at the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors (where she was one of the first presidents); the National Academy of Design from 1898; The Trans-Mississippi Expo, Omaha, Neb. in 1898.  She was a member of the National Arts Club, the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, and the Society of American Artists.1
