After his mother died in 1895, Harold and his brother Herman were left in the care of their mother's parents (and their father moved away to Michigan in 1897). Harold and Herman were shown in the 1900 census (Jun 12 1900), living in their grandparents household in Randolph County, Indiana:4

Washington St., Indianapolis, and his occupation as "city patrolman - traffic squad" with the City of Indianapolis. He was recorded as medium build, medium height, blue eyes, light hair.6
Harold attended a Pinkerton police/detective academy in Indianapolis, and later was for many years the Sheriff of Skagit County, Washington.10
He married Leila Margaret Adema, about 1922.1,11 Leila, daughter of Samuel T. + Madge L. Adema, was born Oct 29 1901, Michigan.3,11,12
Harold and family were shown in the 1930 census (Apr 22 1930), Mt. Vernon - Clear Lake River Road, West Clear Lake Township, Skagit County, Washington:11
