Maude had been previously married to Walter Murphy who had died in 1914, with whom she had four children: Oather Ray, Vera, Jessie Ray and Era Belle Murphy.1
Cleave worked in the fields harvesting fruit and vegetables. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.1
On Jun 5 1917 Grover Cleveland Henshaw, age 27, registered for the World War I draft in King Mills, Sharp County, Arkansas. He declared he was born Oct 11 1889 in Paint Rock, Alabama, and he was then residing in King Mills, Arkansas where he was a self-employed farmer with a wife and five children. He was recorded as medium height, medium build, light blue eyes, light brown hair. He claimed an exemption to the draft due to "physical disability and dependent relatives" (although the disability section of the form was left blank).9
