Emmett moved from Missouri to Stafford County, Kansas in 1895.    He homesteaded a quarter section of land 3 miles west and 3 miles south of Stafford, Kansas.    Emmett and Ada lived in a dug-out for one year and then moved to the Hinshaw Ranch in 1896, assisting Emmett's brother William Henry.135
Emmett was a merchant in Reno County, Kansas.1    In 1897 Emmett and his brother J.N. purchased a general murchandise store in Plevna, Kansas, and renamed it the "Hinshaw and Hinshaw General Store".135    Emmett also owned the "Hinshaw Grain Company" and was one of the founders of the Plevna State Bank.135
