During the Civil War, Thomas served as a private in Company D, 33rd Tennessee Infantry.13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20 On Jan 1 1863 Thomas was captured by Union Soldiers in Henry County, Tennessee. On Feb 2 1863 he arrived at the Union prison camp at Alton, Illinois. Freed on exchange Apr 1 1863. He was again captured on Sep 19 1863 near Chickamauga, Georgia, forwarded to Louisville, Kentucky for exchange on Oct 14 1863 (apparently arriving there on Nov 28 1863). Released on oath Mar 15 1865.3,17 Alton Prison recorded Thomas as age 23, 5' 10.5" tall, dark complexion, black hair, black eyes.17
He married Sarah Samanthia Keller, May 24 1866, Fountain County, Indiana.1,2,12,21,22 Sarah, daughter of James M. Keller & Sarah Ann Norris, was born May 24 1845, Indiana.2,4,5,23,24,25
Thomas and Sarah lived in Veedersburg, Fountain County, Indiana.3

It is unknown what became of Sarah (they might possibly have divorced).27 Thomas moved to Hickman County, Kentucky, taking daughter Martha Jane to live with him, but leaving the other children in Indiana.3
He then married Malinda A. Davis, 1887.3,7,8,10 Malinda, daughter of Isaac Barton Davis & Margaret Jane Childress, was born Feb - 1864, near Crystal, Obion County, Tennessee.2,3,7,8,10,28 Malinda was one half Native American Cherokee.2
Malinda had apparently been previously married to10 (probably briefly), or had a relationship with,27 a -- Johnson, by whom she had a daughter, Elva/Elvy Johnson.7,28
Malinda's brother, William D. Davis, married her step-daughter Martha Jane Hinshaw in the early 1900s.3

Malinda died Jul 15 1910, age 43.28 Medical: Malinda died from tuberculosis.28
Malinda's obituary was published in the "Hickman Courier" (Hickman, Fulton County, Kentucky) on Friday, July 15, 1910:28
Malinda Hinshaw, 43, wife of Thos. Hinshaw died in West Hickman this morning at 3 o'clock from tuberculosis. She was born near Crystal, Tenn. Survived by her husband, and five children -- Elvy Johnson, Malinda, Ira, Tom, and J. Hinshaw. Burial will be this afternoon at City Cemetery.

Although Malinda's obituary states she was to be buried in "City Cemetery", there is no record of her burial in Hickman City Cemetery. However there are two graves in the Sassafrass Ridge Cemetery with missing gravestones (only the bases remaining), next to Malinda's mother, M.J. Davis.3
Thomas Baron Hinshaw died Aug 5 1918, buried Wrenfrow Cemetery (Janes Cemetery), Ravenden Springs, Randolph County, Arkansas.3,20,29
At the entrance to the Hickman City Cemetery there is a monument to Confederate soldiers, including "T.B. Henshaw", Company D, 33rd Tennessee Infantry.30
