At the age of 19, Thomas went to work as a laborer in a factory, where he began using Thomas as his first name.1  

In 1910 Thomas lived on Mengel Lane, Sassafrass Ridge, Fulton County, Kentucky.14  

In 1912 he worked as a "railroad maintenance man".  At the railroad he met his future wife Alice, who worked there as a cook.15  

He married Alice Georgia Hopkins, about 1911.1,4  Alice, daughter of Uriah Hopkins & Arminta Lucrethia Augusta Proffer, was born Jan 3 1893, Missouri.1,3,4,5,13,16  

On Jun 2 1917 Thomas Vestel Hinshaw, age 26, registered for the World War I draft in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He declared he was born December 16 1890 in Hickman [county], Kentucky, and was then residing at 5260 Second Ave., Pittsburgh with a wife and two children, and was a fireman employed by the B&O R.R.  He claimed an exemption due to "wife and two children".  He was recorded as medium height, medium build, grey-brown eyes, black hair.9

In 1942 Thomas Vestel Hinshaw, age 51, registered for the World War II draft in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He declared he was born 12-16-1890 in Hickman [county], Kentucky, and was then residing at 4612 Sylvan Ave., Pittsburgh, employed by the Pittsburgh Railways Co.  He declared his relative/contact was Mrs. Alice Hinshaw of the same address.10

In 1974 Alice was living in/near Santa Fe Springs, Los Angeles County, California.16  

Alice died Nov 6 1974, buried Olive Lawn Memorial Park, La Mirada, Los Angeles County, California.1,16,18  (Nov 4 1974).13
