On Sep 12 1918 Fred Jay Smith, age 45, registered for the World War I draft in Addison, Steuben County, New York.  He declared he was born June 2 1873, and was then residing in Rathbone, Steuben County, New York, employed by the Erie Railroad as a track laborer.  He declared his nearest relative was his wife, Mary Smith of Rathbone.  He was recorded as medium height, slender, blue eyes, dark brown hair.9
