James was shown in the 1880 census working as a laborer in Sullivan County, Tennessee:7

Cox, Timothy, age 23, born in Tennessee; shoemaker.
Cox, Mary E., wife, age 25, born in Tennessee.

Hinshaw, James, servant, age 21, born in Tennessee; parents born in Tennessee; laborer.

He married Mary Isabell Summers1,2,8 [Bell Summers2,8], Aug 13 18841,2,8, Knox County, Tennessee1,2,8.  Mary, daughter of George W. Summers, was born about 1850, Knox County, Tennessee.1  

Note that James' brother Milton married Bell's sister Lizzie Summers.3  

Mary died Dec - 1887, Knoxville, Tennessee.1  

He then married Elizabeth -.4  

James Madison Hinshaw died Jan 30 1925, at his home, 2011 Penn St., Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri; age 64y 10m 7d.4
