On Jun 5 [1917] Hartwell Henshaw, age 25, registered for the World War I draft in Chesterfield County, Virginia.  He declared he was born Apr 12 1892 in Chesterfield County, Virginia, and was then residing in Chester, Virginia, single and a farmer employed by L.R. Martin of Chesterfield County.  He was recorded as short, medium build, gray eyes, light brown hair, and "loss of right thumb".8  

Hartwell was shown in the 1920 census (Jan 22 1920), living with his maternal uncle, Lee R. Martin, and his family in Chesterfield County, Virginia:7

He then married Mary Lee Martin, Jun 23 1923.1,2  Mary, daughter of Lee Roy Martin & Mary Ellen Vaughan, was born Feb 23 1906, Chesterfield County, Virginia.1,2,7,9  Mary Lee was Betty's sister; Hartwell and Mary Lee were also first cousins.7  

Mary died Nov 23 1923, buried Vaughan family cemetery (now Bermuda Golf Course), Burmuda, Chesterfield County, Virginia.1,2,9

On Apr 27 1942 Hartwell Mantique Henshaw, age 50, registered for the World War II draft in Chesterfield County, Virginia.  He declared he was born April 12 1892 in Chesterfield County, Virginia, and was then residing on "Court House rd. at Reams Road", Chesterfield County, Virginia, where he was employed by C.C. Scroggs of Richmond.  He declared his relative/contact was Mrs. H.C. Henshaw of Richmond.  He was recorded as 6'4" tall, 152 lbs., gray eyes, brown hair, light complexion, and "Thumb missing on right hand" and "Index finger missing on left hand".5  

Hartwell Montique Henshaw died Sep 18 1945, Chesterfield County, Virginia; buried Sep 21 1945, Henshaw Family Cemetery, Chesterfield County, Virginia.1,2
