Jonathan Armstrong Hinshaw2,9,10 [Jonathan Armstrong Henshaw11, Armstrong Hinshaw12, Armstrong Henshaw13].

Born Jun 2 1837, North Carolina.7,9,11,13,14  (Jul 6 1838).1  (c1840).15  (c1842).16,17

Jonathan moved from North Carolina to Missouri, then in 1859 he crossed the plains "from near the Platt River"1 to California, settling in the San Felipe Valley (Santa Clara County), Napa, Santa Clara, then eventually Campbell (Santa Clara County).1

He married Rachael Elizabeth Moody1,9,18 [Elizabeth Moody3], Nov 15 18591,9,18, Santa Clara County, California1,9,18.  Rachael, daughter of John Moody & Mary "Polly" King, was born Jun 10 1844, Missouri.1,5,9,10,11  (probably Jackson County, Missouri).19  (May 2 1844).2,7,14

Marriage license issued Oct 19 1859; they were married the following Nov 15 by W. Gallimore of Santa Clara County, "Minister of the Gospel".9  Jonathan was recorded as a resident of Santa Clara County, age 22, born in North Carolina.9  Rachel was also from Santa Clara County, age 16, born in Missouri.9

Jonathan and Rachel were early pioneers of Santa Clara County, California.1  Rachel's family had just moved in 1859 from Jackson County, Missouri to Mountain View, Santa Clara County.19  Her uncle, Dan L. Moody, had a livery stable in Santa Clara1 (where Jonathan's brother William worked).

Jonathan and Rachel were shown in the 1860 census (Jul 19 1860), Santa Clara County, California.  They were shown living in Fremont together with the family of Rachel's parents, John and Polly Moody:20

John Moody, age 57, born in Kentucky; farmer; $200 real estate.
Polly Moody, age 63, born in Virginia.

Flora A. Moody, age 4 months, born in California.
Wm Armstrong, age 30, born in Virginia; farm laborer.
John Singleton, age 25, born in Tennessee; farm laborer.
Note that Jonathan's birthplace was recorded in the 1860 census as "unknown" (it is unclear if this means Jonathan himself did not know his birthplace, of if somebody else was providing the census information and did not know his birthplace, although note that his birthplace had been known and recorded as North Carolina on his marriage record only one year earlier).

Note that Jonathan was shown as a teamster in the 1870 census.15,23  His brother Nathan was also a teamster,15,23 and their other brother William was a teamster working at the Moody Stables in San Jose,24 owned by Rachel's uncle (or brother) Daniel Lewis Moody.19  It is not certain, but is seems likely that Jonathan and Nathan also worked at Moody Stables.  (Note also that Jonathan and Rachel named their son Daniel Louis, presumably named after Rachel's brother).

Jonathan's daughter Bertha described him as a "horticulturist" who worked for C.C.Morse, "who was also his friend".1  The Morse seed company was indeed located in Mountain View where Jonathan was listed as a "teamster", so perhaps he was actually a teamster for the Morse seed company.25

Respected Pioneer Passes from Life
J. A. Hinshaw Was an Old Resident of Santa Clara

Santa Clara, March 31.  John A. Hinshaw, a well-known pioneer resident of this place, died last night at his residence near Campbell after a lingering illness.  Six years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis, which, coupled with a severe attack of rheumatism, caused his death.  The deceased was a native of North Carolina, and was in his sixty-fourth year.  He arrived here during the early fifties, having crossed the plains with Dan Moody, the well-known liveryman of this place.  For many years Mr. Hinshaw farmed here.  Some years ago he removed south of Campbell Station, where he had since resided.  A widow and seven grown children survive him.
