to Dec. 22, 2009Our beloved mother, Rowena, sadly passed from us on December 22, 2009. She incredibly defied death only two weeks before, when she was at the precipice. We firmly believe she had unfinished business here on earth to take care of before her final journey. Rowena was born in Bremerton on March 24, 1924 to Etta Eggleston Harkins, former Postmistress of Manette, and retired Army Captain Earl Harkins, a tireless civic leader. Captain Harkins was instrumental in dedicating the memorial at Illahee State Park, to all of the men-women who served in the US Navy during WWII. She was blessed to have brother James Eggleston and sister, Anna Jo Harkins Atkinson to guide her. She certainly came in to a family of doers! Rowena, an especially gifted singer, played the piano by ear, and had a keen eye as an artist. She had a penchant for writing, her knowledge spanned a myriad of topics, and her interest in current events was insatiable. If she didn't keep you glued to the chair - she'd make sure the glue was there before you sat down, so you heard every word she had to say! She met and fell in love with George Hinshaw, a US Naval Corpsman, and in 1944 they were married. George attended the University of Washington school of Pharmacy and upon graduation in 1949, the couple and their young daughter, Carolynn, moved to San Diego, CA, where he set up practice. Over the next few years, two more children, Nancy and Gregory, were born into their family. As her children grew older, Rowena was able to take the position of West Coast sales representative for Chic Creations where she traveled seven states. After enough years on the road however, she felt it was time to settle down, so she took a position with the Naval Exchange in San Diego and was there for 20+ years! When she finally retired at 68, she took great pleasure in being with her children and grandchildren. She traveled to Europe and Alaska, and back to Washington for a few of her high school reunions, when she was able to visit with her very dear friends who meant the world to her. Rowena leaves behind her three adult children; grandchildren Mischa, Jessica, Mallory, Tadashi; one great grandchild Liam; sons in law Dexter La Pierre and Gary Morishita; and dearest family friend, Leslie Bremer and her family. Her husband George and grandson Kai predeceased her. There will be a celebration of her life in La Jolla, CA in January. Her ashes will be taken back home to Washington, where her heart never left.
