Johnathan Hinshaw1 [Jonathan Henshaw5, John Henshaw2, Jonathan Hincher6].

Indeces and abstracts of the 1850 census can't seem to agree on the spelling of Jonathan's name (John v.s. Jonathan).  But microfilm images of the actual orginal 1850 census page clearly shows his name as Johnn (an abbreviated Johnathan, not simply John).1  His surname spelling isn't as easily discerned as the census handwriting is ambiguous and could be seen as either Hinshaw or Henshaw.1  However since he was born in North Carolina it is almost a certainty that his family was known by Hinshaw.  An index of the 1839 state tax list shows him as Jonathan Hincher.

Born about 1801, North Carolina.1,2

He married Lydia -.1,2  Lydia was born about 1805, North Carolina.1

It appears that Jonathan's family remained in North Carolina (where sons William, c1832, and Jonathan, 1838, were born) until about 1838-39, when they apparently moved to Missouri (where son Nathan was born in 1845).

Jonathan Hincher was shown in the 1839 Missouri State Tax List, living in Platte County, Missouri.6,7,8  On the same tax list, also in Platte County, was an unidentified James Henshaw.7,8

Johnathan and family were shown in the 1840 census, Platte County, Missouri:9

Jonathan Henshaw household:
3 males under age 5 [Columbus, Jonathan Armstrong and Theophilus].
2 males age 10-15 [Ellis and William].
1 male age 30-40 [Jonathan].
1 female age 30-40 [Lydia].
no slaves.

On Apr 1 1846 Jonathan Hinshaw purchased 160 acres of land in Platte County, Missouri.10  He was described in this record as "Jonathan Hinshaw of Platte County, Missouri".10

On Jun 8 1848 Jonathan Hinshaw witnessed the last will and testament of a William Malotte of Platte County, Missouri; recorded Jul 3 1848 with Jonathan Hinshaw as security for the executrix of the estate of William Malotte.11

Johnathan Hinshaw and family were shown in the 1850 census (Nov 13 1850), Pettis Township, Platte County, Missouri:1,2

Also see: Jonathan Hinshaw #4535.  There are many circumstantial connections that seem to point to Jonathan Hinshaw #4535.  The brother of Jonathan #4535, Eli Hinshaw, had a son who was known to have settled in Missouri.  His other brother, Benjamin Hinshaw, is believed to possibly be the same Benjamin Hinshaw who married Sarah Vestal and whose descendents settled in Missouri.

Jonathan Henshaw #15096 was born in Randolph County, North Carolina about 1776, and enlisted during the War of 1812 in Hillsboro [Ohio], and was given a land grant in Platte County, Missouri.  Jonathan Henshaw #15096 might very possibly have been this Jonathan's father.12

Also see: Jonathan Henshaw who married in Tennessee in 1827.

Also see: Jesse Hinshaw #16569 who was probably an additional child of this family.12
