Thomas Hinshaw [ID 00825] | Click here to switch to Ahnentafel view: |
Born 4-21-1764, Ballyhagen, County Tyrone, Ireland.1,3,6,7
There are some hints that Thomas was not actually the son of John Hinshaw and Rebecca Wethereld, but rather was the illegitimate son of John Hinshaw and his wife's younger sister, Martha Wethereld. Thomas was raised in Ireland by Martha Wethereld (daughter of William & Sarah Wethereld) and her husband, Stephen Johnson.3
Thomas Hinshaw emigrated from Ireland to North Carolina in 1793.1,6,8 Thomas and Martha (Wethereld) Johnson were both received in North Carolina on certificates of the same date from Ireland.3
At Cane Creek MM on 3-1-1794, Thomas was received on a certificate from Ballihagan MM, Ireland, dated 2-21-1793:1,3
Martha (Wethereld) Johnson, who reportedly raised Thomas in Ireland, was also received at this same time at Deep Creek MM (with her husband's family) on a certificate of the same date.3
"There came a certificate to this meeting from a monthly meeting held at Ballingham in Ireland, dated twenty-first of Second month, 1793, for Thomas Hinshaw, recommending him as a member, which was accepted."
On this same date (3-1-1794), Thomas was also reported "married out of unity":1,3
He married Rebecca Holliday1,2,3,6,8 [Rebekah Holliday1], about 17941,2,3,6,8, Cane Creek MM, North Carolina1,2,3,6,8. Rebecca, daughter of Henry Holliday & Mary Fayle, was born 6-21-1764, Orange County, North Carolina.1,3,6,7
"The above said Thomas Hinshaw produced an offering to this meeting condemning his out-going in marriage, which was received as satisfactory for same."
William Wade Hinshaw described Thomas & Rebecca's marriage as "a runaway marriage". Apparently Rebecca's parents were not pleased with Thomas and never gave their blessing to the marriage3,8 (this might have had something to do with his questionable maternity).
At Cane Creek MM on 11-7-1795, Rebekah was "received by request".1
In North Carolina, Thomas may have been "adopted" by his uncle William - note the naming of Thomas' first three children: Mary (William's second wife), Sarah (William's daughter, also Thomas' grandmother), and William, followed by Martha and Stephen (his "adopting" parents in Ireland).3
In April, 1808, Thomas purchased approximately 200 acres of land for $750. He purchased the land from a William Farlow, who had received a large tract of land from King George III at the rate of 50 Shillings (~ $12) per 100 acres.3 Thomas is quoted as once saying he had
"raped oats shoetop dape in snaw many a toime in County Tyrone".9 (say this right and you'll hear a perfect Irish accent).
Thomas Hinshaw died 8-21-1822, Randleman, Randolph County, North Carolina; buried Marlborough Meeting Grounds Cemetery, Marlboro Friends Church, Sophia, North Carolina.1,3,6,7,10
Rebecca died 8-30-1848, Randleman, Randolph County, North Carolina; buried Marlborough Meeting Grounds Cemetery, Marlboro Friends Church, Sophia, North Carolina.1,3,6,7
Rebecca wrote her last will and testament on Oct 18 1846, probated in Feb 184911 (see below).
