Mona Hughes, 1916-2006

Mona Mae Hughes, 90, of Kingdom City, formerly of Columbia, passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at Callaway Community Hospital.  

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at Memorial Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tracy Cook officiating.  Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.  Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery.  

Ms. Hughes was born on March 3, 1916, the daughter of James and Nellie Hinshaw.  She was a longtime employee of Shelter Insurance Cos.  

Survivors include one son, Ronnie Hughes of Kingdom City; two brothers, Therion Hinshaw of Jefferson City and Jimmie R. Hinshaw of Columbia; six grandchildren, Pattie Forbis of Centralia, Edith Canole of Hallsville, Rick Hughes of Fulton, Randy Hughes of Kingdom City, Charlie Forbis of Hallsville and De De Nichols of Kingdom City; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.  

She was preceded in death by daughter Peggy Forbis; one granddaughter, DeEtta Hughes; six brothers, Boyd Hinshaw, Roy Hinshaw, Paul Hinshaw, Allen Hinshaw, Kenneth Hinshaw and Elwood Hinshaw; and three sisters, Velma Bennett, Irene Ballard and Marie Wilhite.

Life stories: Mona Mae Hughes

Mona Mae Hughes of Kingdom City, formerly of Columbia, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at Callaway Community Hospital.  She was 90.  

Ms. Hughes was born on March 3, 1916, to James and Nellie Hinshaw.  She was the fourth of 12 children.  

She raised her two children, Ronnie Hughes and Peggy Forbis, by herself.  

"They were just a hard-working family," said her sister-in-law, Judy Hinshaw.  "She worked hard all her life."  

She was a longtime employee of Shelter Insurance Cos.  

Ms. Hughes especially enjoyed dancing and often attended concerts at which her son, Ronnie, performed with his band.  

She is survived by her son, Ronnie Hughes, of Kingdom City; two brothers, Therion Hinshaw of Jefferson City and Jimmie R. Hinshaw of Columbia; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  

Her daughter, Peggy Forbis; six brothers, Boyd Hinshaw, Roy Hinshaw, Paul Hinshaw, Allen Hinshaw, Kenneth Hinshaw and Elwood Hinshaw; three sisters, Velma Bennett, Irene Ballard and Marie Wilhite; and one granddaughter, DeEtta Hughes, died earlier.  

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.  

Services, conducted by the Rev. Tracy Cook, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
