On Jun 5 1917 Walter A. Hinshaw, age 24, registered for the World War I draft in Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois. He declared he was born November 26th 1892 in Danvers, McLean County, Illinois. He was then residing at 1222 S. Low, Bloomington, where he was married with a wife & two children, employed as an automobile mechanic with Arnold Bros., 214 E. Front St. He was recorded as medium height, medium build, brown eyes, brown hair.6
During World War I, Walt served in the U.S. Army as a Private12 in 9th Company, 155th Brigade,13 and in H Company (Headquarters), 7th Infantry, 3rd Division.13,14 He enlisted or was inducted on Jan 29 1918 at Camp Greene, Charlotte, North Carolina, and was honorably discharged Mar 22 1919 at Camp Lee, Virginia.13 At enlistment he was recorded as age 25, born in Danvers, Illinois, 5' 5 1/4" tall, brown eyes, dark brown hair, ruddy complexion, and having been occupied as a mechanic. He served in the American Expeditionary Force from Apr 6 1918 to Jan 9 1919,13 and was stationed in France,12 having served during the Battle of Belleau Wood13 (Jun 1-26 1918, near the Marne River in France).15 His service record officially noted he received a gunshot wound in his left thigh, as well as "internal injuries by H.E."13 (high explosives). In addition, he had been gassed, which caused lifelong breathing difficulty.12 Unofficially, as later told by his wife and son, he had been issued a motorcycle (since he had knowledge of mechanics) and was assigned messenger duty, relaying messages between units. One day he was riding the motorcycle, delivering messages, and was hungry, so he stopped at a French farmer's field to steal some lunch. While stopped there, he was shot from a distance by a German sniper.12
After the war, Walt, having experienced new excitement in France, decided not to return to farm life. He settled in Chicago and stayed there for some time, alone, until finally his mother wrote him a letter insisting that he send for his wife and children.12
