Born Apr 25 1893, Proctorville, Lawrence County, Ohio.^{4,7,9,10,12,13,14,15}  

Jesse had a relationship with Thelma M. Robinson, with whom he had daughter Dorothy.  Jesse and Thelma were never formally married.¹⁶  Thelma, daughter of William R. Robinson & Charlotte Mandy, was born Aug 1 1899, Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia.^{3,4,17,18,19,20,21}  

On Jun 5 1917 Jesse Dowell Hanshaw, age 24, registered for the World War I draft in Huntington, West Virginia.  He declared he was born April 25th 1893 in Proctorsville [sic], Ohio, and was then residing at 901 23rd St., Huntington, West Virginia where he had a wife and child, and was a boiler maker helper employed by Huntington Boiler Works.  He was recorded as medium height, slender, brown eyes, dark red hair.⁹  

Daughter Dorothy was raised by Thelma's parents,¹⁶ William R. & Charlotte/Sherlotta Robinson.  Thelma married a Lewis/Louis/Lou E. Kuntz.^16,22,23  Thelma died May - 1984.^16,21

Jesse was shown in the 1930 census (Apr 8 1930), living with the family of his deceased brother Edgar, 202 38th Street, Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia:⁴

He married Thelma Riley, Apr 8 1933, Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia.¹¹  Thelma was born about 1912, Lawrence County, Ohio.^7,11  

At the time of their marriage Jesse was age 38 (born in Lawrence County, Ohio), and Thelma was age 21 (born in Lawrence County, Ohio), both residents of Cabell County, West Virginia.¹¹

In 1942 Jesse Dowell Hanshaw, age 49, registered for the World War II draft in Clay County, West Virginia.  He declared he was born April 25 1893 in Lawrence County, Ohio, and was then residing at 214 1/2 Buffington St., Guyandotte, Cabell County, West Virginia.  He declared a contact relative was Mrs. Thelma Hanshaw of the same address.  He was recorded as 5'10" tall, 160 lbs., blue eyes, gray hair, ruddy complexion.¹⁵  

Jesse Dowell Hanshaw died Jun 26 1955, at his home, 407 Bridge Street, Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia; age 62y 2m 1d.^10,24
