Born Apr 6 1798, Orange County, Virginia.1,4,5  James and brother John were twins.4  

He married Lucy Walker, Nov 13 1821, Madison County, Virginia.1,6  

He then married Amelia Herndon, May 29 1832, Henry County, Kentucky.1  

James apparently owned a very large plantation in Oldham County, Kentucky,7 as did brother Philip.8,9  

The account book of Philip T. Henshaw is held at the Winterthur Library, Joseph Downs Collection of Manuscripts and Printed Ephemera, Winterthur, Delaware.10  The account book records the accounts of Philip Henshaw, James Henshaw, and a Mrs. Sarah Henshaw (relationships unknown but possibly the wife of brother Philip) when they resided in Jefferson County, Kentucky, 1817-1829.10  

James and family were shown in the 1840 census, Oldham County, Kentucky:7

1 free white female age 5-10.

1 free white female age 15-20.
1 free white female age 20-30.

1 male slave age 36-55.
4 female slaves under age 10.
10 female slaves age 10-24.
3 female slaves age 36-55.
44 total persons.
15 persons engaged in agriculture.

James and family were again shown in the 1850 census (Sep 4 1850), Oldham County, Kentucky:5

James Hendshaw, age 52, born in Virginia; farmer; $23,820 real estate.
Lucy Hendshaw, age 17, born in Kentucky.
Philippi Hendshaw, age 14, born in Kentucky; attended school.
Caroline Hendshaw, age 13, born in Kentucky; attended school.
Henrietta Hendshaw, age 5, born in Kentucky.
Living next door in 1850 was the family of Thomas & Mary Foster, overseer11 (probably the overseer of James' plantation).12  

The 1850 Slave Schedule also shows:13
