Born Apr 6 1798, Orange County, Virginia.1,2,3 John and brother James were twins.1
He married Sarah Cowherd, Dec 8 1818, Orange County, Virginia.1,2,3,4 Sarah, daughter of Francis Cowherd & Lucy Scott, was born Feb 11 1793, Orange County, Virginia.1,2,4
Note that John's sister Sally married Sarah's brother, Francis Cowherd. Also, Sarah's brother, John Scott Cowherd, was the father of John Peyton Cowherd who married John's niece Phillipa Anne Henshaw.
John Henshaw died 1834, at his brother's home, Oldham County, Kentucky.1,2 (in the fall of 1834).1
Sarah died Apr 4 1838, Calloway County, Missouri.1,2,4
John and Sarah had a farm in or near Calloway County, Missouri, near John's sister Sallie and her husband Frank.1 After John and Sarah both took ill and died, their seven children were left with Sallie and Frank who raised them along with their own children.5
John and Sarah's son Francis wrote a letter on March 31, 1899 (from Blackwell, Oklahoma) to his daughter Mrs. Fannie Darr, where he discussed his parents:5
My father came to Missouri in the fall of 1833. Winter weather caused him to stop in Callaway County, Missouri. He got so unwell during the winter of 1833 amd 1834 with dropsical symptoms that we went to his twin brother James living in Oldham County, Kentucky, whose physician had the reputation of being able to cure dropsy. It was thought that the father was in a manner cured of the dropsy, but took a relapse and died of a complication of diseases in the fall of 1834 at his brother's house. My mother died a short time after father's death in 1834 or the Spring of 1835. I believe it was in 1835 that mother died on a farm that we had rented in Calloway County, Missouri of St. Anthony's fire after a few short sickings. Uncle Frank Cowherd had in the mean time moved to MO and rented a farm near the one mother died on. Mother's Children seven (7) in number all went to Uncle's to live and came to Jackson County with Uncle Frank in the year 1836. Uncle have 7 children of this own made his family 14 children in number, as happy a set as ever lived together. I got a letter from Sister Philippa. Tom and Mary's health has been bed after one year vacation. She is teaching again, has a 9 month school near Independence. Lulu Kate has no children, Emma Parker has poor health and is living in K. City, has two living children and 2 gr children. Maurice is R. Roading in Nebraska, Ethelbert is in Franklin County, Missouri fishing and crofasing (??) passengers over the river and making a little gardern. Raymond is in Erie, Pennsylvania working in a Lithographic establishment, is married and has a boy. As paper is out, I won't write you a sermon. Yours, Francis Henshaw.
