During the Civil War, Edwin Henshaw served as a 2nd Corporal in Company C, 4th Virginia Infantry.5,11,12  (Cavalry).13  He enlisted as a Private on Apr 24 1861; promoted to full Corporal 2nd Class in 1861; taken POW on Jan 31 1864 in Madison County, Virginia; confined Feb 3 1864 at Old Capitol Prison, Washington D.C.; confined Jun 15 1864 at Fort Delaware, Delaware; exchanged on Oct 31 1864; surrendered on May 20 1865 at Gordonsville, Virginia.13  There are six letters from Edwin written at Old Capitol Prison in the files at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia.14  

Edwin and his widowed mother were shown in the 1870 census (Aug 2 1870) living in the household of a John H. & Sophia J. Lillard in Robertson Township, Madison County, Virginia:9

Lillard, Sophia J., age 21, born in Virginia; keeps house.
Henshaw, Edwin, age 38, born in Virginia; merchant (dry goods).
