During the Civil War, Edwin Henshaw served as a 2nd Corporal in Company C, 4th Virginia Infantry.^5,11,12 (Cavalry).¹³ He enlisted as a Private on Apr 24 1861; promoted to full Corporal 2nd Class in 1861; taken POW on Jan 31 1864 in Madison County, Virginia; confined Feb 3 1864 at Old Capitol Prison, Washington D.C.; confined Jun 15 1864 at Fort Delaware, Delaware; exchanged on Oct 31 1864; surrendered on May 20 1865 at Gordonsville, Virginia.¹³ There are six letters from Edwin written at Old Capitol Prison in the files at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia.¹⁴

Edwin and his widowed mother were shown in the 1870 census (Aug 2 1870) living in the household of a John H. & Sophia J. Lillard in Robertson Township, Madison County, Virginia:⁹
