John served in the War of 1812.5
John inherited a 1/10th interest in 110 acres of land from his father's estate.8 In an Indenture (Frederick County, Virginia) of Nov 10 1824 between John Hancher and "Sarah his wife", they sold their 1/10th undivided interest in the estate.9
Note that the above Indenture seems to indicate John had married a Sarah sometime prior to 1824.9
He married Nancy Ann O'Rourke1 [Ann O'Rourke2, Nancy Ann O'Rorke3,5], 18271. Nancy was born Dec 31 1807, Virginia.1,5,10
Following their marriage, John and Nancy settled in Harrison County, Ohio. During 1850 they moved to Campbell County, Kentucky.1

In 1864, Nancy and three of her children (Abel, Thomas and Isabelle) moved near Plover, Powhatan Township, Pocahontas County, Iowa1 (another son, Barney, had preceeded them to Iowa).1
Nancy died Oct 2 1882, Pocahontas County, Iowa; buried Powhatan Township Cemetery, Plover, Pocahontas County, Iowa.1,10
