Maggie and family moved from Idaho to Oregon about 1910, but returned to Idaho a year later. Joseph had teams of horses and contracted to haul freight, make roads and farm, so the family returned to the Willamette Valley/Roseburg area to work their horse teams. Later, they traveled south with the teams to work the hay and grain fields in the Fort Klamath area, but a grasshopper infestation destroyed the crops, so they continued on to California to work the rice fields. They returned to the Rogue Valley, settling in Phoenix (Jackson County, Oregon) around 1920.9
