Carl Hanshaw LEXINGTON - Carl Hanshaw, 85, of Lexington died Thursday, March 15, 2007, of complications after a massive stroke, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, surrounded by his family. Carl was born in Paxton and educated in Clay County, W.Va. Before serving his country in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the USS Poole for four years during World War II, he helped build recreation facilities at Kanawha State Forest, W.Va., as a "CCC Boy." Carl was also an active member of VFW Post 3074 and of Am Vets Post 13 and a Life Member of the American Legion. His career at Owens-Illinois Glass Co. spanned 40 years in various locations including Charleston, W.Va.; Brockport, N.Y.; North Bergen, N.J. He retired from the Welcome plant. When he was not fishing with his friends and family, his passion was volunteering. His primary focus was Crisis Ministry of Davidson County for which he assisted in the construction of the first permanent homeless shelter. He was later recognized for his tireless contributions to the American Red Cross, Life Center, surplus-food distribution site and the local community by receiving the A. Odell Leonard Humanitarian Award presented by the Lexington Civitan Club. He was also honored with the "2 Those Who Care Service to the Piedmont Award," presented by WFMY-TV News, Greensboro. Whether swimming at the Y or playing pinochle at the Senior Center, he truly enjoyed each day. As Carl would say, "Have truck, will travel." His parents, Van and Rhoda Hanshaw, preceded him in death; in addition to his brothers, Guy, Kennie, Oliver, Clyde and Van Jr.; and his sisters, Cora Fields and Olive and Maxine Circle. He is survived by his wife, Mildred "Mickey" Russell Hanshaw; his four children, Stephen (Carmen) Hanshaw of Sugar Land, Texas; Dora Hanshaw of Charlotte; Kimberly (Dennis) Crosby of Suwannee, Ga.; and Kenneth (Patricia) Hanshaw of Charlotte; and eight grandchildren, Carla (Mark) Hunt; Doug and Suzanne Hanshaw; Tyler, Adam and Clay Crosby; and Megan and Joseph Hanshaw. He is also survived by his sisters, Sister Mary Imelda of Stella Niagara, N.Y.; Amelda Samples of North Canton, Ohio; Christine Downs of St. Albans, W.Va.; and Jean (Earl) Mitchell of Godfrey, Ill. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Fairmont Presbyterian Church, 1436 Cotton Grove Road, Lexington, with the Rev. Randy Hall officiating. The family will receive visitors and celebrate Carl's life after the memorial service at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 300 S. Main St., Lexington. Mildred Russell Hanshaw Mildred "Mickey" Russell Hanshaw, 81, of Lexington, N.C., died suddenly Wednesday, November 14, 2007, at home of a heart attack.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at Fairmont Presbyterian Church, 1436 Cotton Grove Road, Lexington N.C., presided by the Rev. Randy Hall.
The family will receive visitors and celebrate Mickey's life in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.
Mickey was born in Poca and educated in Putnam County, W.Va.
In addition to her husband, Carl, she was preceded in death by her parents, Owen and Hattie Russell; her three brothers, Owen Jr., Lawrence and William; and her three sisters, Harriet Carr, Margaret Carver and Helen Neville.
She was an accomplished seamstress and an avid reader and loved cooking, especially desserts. Current events dominated her daily conversation and her continuous pursuit of knowledge prompted her to study Spanish at age 80. Her lifelong love of the arts included listening to music, attending live performances and exploring numerous fine art exhibits.
In addition to enjoying time with her family, Mickey was an active member of Davidson County In-City Extension group (Lunch Bunch) and Fairmont Presbyterian Church, which she served through her participation in Presbyterian Women. She felt her greatest accomplishments were her four children.
Surviving are her four children, Stephen Hanshaw and his wife, Carmen, of Sugar Land, Texas, Dora Hanshaw of Charlotte, N.C., Kimberly Crosby and her husband, Dennis, of Suwannee, Ga., and Kenneth Hanshaw and his wife, Patricia, of Charlotte; eight grandchildren, Carla Hunt and her husband, Mark, Doug and Suzanne Hanshaw, Tyler, Adam and Clay Crosby and Megan and Joseph Hanshaw; two sisters, Mary Carver of Charleston, W.Va., and Evelyn Shannon of St Albans, W.Va.; and one brother Frank of Louisville, Ky.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Fairmont Presbyterian Church, 1436 Cotton Grove Road, Lexington, NC 27292, or Lexington Public Library, 602 S. Main Street, Lexington, NC, 27292.
