Note that Mary's sister Annie married Shubal's brother, Seth W. Laughlin, and Mary's first cousin Winfield Monroe Hinshaw married Shubal's sister, Susanna Laughlin.

Mary and family were shown in the 1900 census (Jun 7 1900), apparently living in the Randolph County Jail (presumably as caretakers or in some capacity except as inmates), Asheboro, Randolph County, North Carolina:⁴

Shubal died Jul 29 1916, Asheboro, Randolph County, North Carolina; age 56y 1m 26d.^6,7,8
