In 1917 the Charleston, West Virginia plant of the Libbey-Owens company, founded by Michael J. Owens & Edward D. Libbey, was run by plant manager William Jacobs. An Owens biographer wrote "Eventually," [sales manager Harry] "Bamford recommended that Jacobs be replaced, suggesting Seth B. Henshaw, a veteran sheet-glass producer. Henshaw was very similar to Owens, demonstrating a constancy of purpose, a hard-driving work ethic, and a fiery temper. Libby, now convinced, moved quickly to replace Jacobs with Henshaw. Owens soon resigned as general manager, agreeing that he was overextended and also remaining loyal to Jacobs. The board appointed Libbey to take over as general manager. He and Henshaw were to have full responsibility for the Charleston plant, with the exception of machine number six, which was to be an experimental operation under Owens".18

He declared he was born April 30 1875, and was then residing in Charleston, employed as an assistant general manager with Libby-Owens Sheet Glass Co. He declared his nearest relative was his wife, Eloise Henshaw of Charleston. He was recorded as medium height, medium build, brown eyes, black hair.6
