During the Civil War James enlisted, along with his half-brother John, in the 29th Tennessee Infantry. James enlisted as a private and ended the war as a captain.^6,9

He married Martha C. McGaughey^{1,3,10,11,12,13} [Mattie C. McGaughey^2,5], May 2 1867^{1,3,10,11,12,13}, Greene County, Tennessee^{1,3,10,11,12,13}. Martha, daughter of David R. McGaughey & Jane K. Wilson, was born Jun 2 1844, Indiana.^{1,2,5,14,15,16,17,18}

Martha died Jul 29 1887, probably Waco, McLennan County, Texas; buried Oakwood Cemetery, McLennan County, Texas.⁵

He then married Angie Roberts⁴ [Angeline Roberts⁵, Angie Quinn¹⁹], about 1891⁴. Angie, daughter of Charles Quinn & - Green^5,19,20, was born Jan 23 1854^5,19,20 [Jun - 1954^4,21], Louisiana^5,19,20 [Texas^4,21]. Angie had been previously married and had three children.⁴

James and family were shown in the 1900 census (Jun 8 1900), 948 South Third St., Waco, McLennan County, Texas:⁴

James Washington Henshaw died Dec 24 1903, probably Waco, McLennan County, Texas; age 64.^5,21,22

Widow Angie was shown in the 1910 census (Apr 18 1910), living alone at 1016 South Third St., Waco, McLennan County, Texas:²¹

Angie died Sep 11 1916, 1016 South 3rd, Waco, McLennan County, Texas; age 62y 7m 19d.^5,19,20,22
