During the Civil War James enlisted, along with his half-brother John, in the 29th Tennessee Infantry.  James enlisted as a private and ended the war as a captain.6,9  

He married Martha C. McGaughey1,3,10,11,12,13 [Mattie C. McGaughey2,5], May 2 18671,3,10,11,12,13, Greene County, Tennessee1,3,10,11,12,13.  Martha, daughter of David R. McGaughey & Jane K. Wilson, was born Jun 2 1844, Indiana.1,2,5,14,15,16,17,18
