Born about 1798, Frederick County, Virginia.8,10  

He married Mary Steward8,9,15 [Mary Stewart4,16, Mary Howard9,15], Mar 13 18228,9,15 [Mar 9 182216], Frederick County, Virginia8,9,15.  Mary was born Virginia.  

Ten children.4  

Smith moved to Ohio about 1823.4  

A Smith Hanshaw was shown in the 1830 census, Shortcreek Township, Harrison County, Ohio (page 111).17  

A Smith Henshaw was shown in the 1840 census, Shortcreek Township, Harrison County, Ohio (page 214).18  [The only other Henshaw shown in Harrison County in 1840 was a Robert Henshaw of Athens Township (page 122)].19  

Mary died 1842, Belmont County, Ohio.20  

He then married Sarah Johnson3,11,12,13 [Sara V. Johnson1,21], Feb 20 18443,11,12,13, Shortcreek Township, Harrison County, Ohio3,11,12,13.  Sarah was born about 1800, Pennsylvania.3  

Smith and family were shown in the 1850 census, Smith Township, Belmont County, Ohio:3

Smith Henshaw, age 50, born in Virginia; farmer.
Sarah Henshaw, age 50, born in Pennsylvania.
Smith Henshaw Jr, age 17, born in Ohio; farmer; attended school.
Vail Henshaw, age 14, born in Ohio; attended school.
Stewart Henshaw, age 12, born in Ohio; attended school.
Eliza Henshaw, age 11, born in Ohio; attended school.
John Henshaw, age 19, born in Ohio; laborer.
William Henshaw, age 25, born in Ohio; farmer.

Smith Hancher died 1865, Saint Clairsville, Belmont County, Ohio.10  

A biographical sketch of son Smith M. Hanshaw was published in the 1901 "History of Wapello County, Iowa and Representative Citizens", and included the following regarding his father, Smith Hanshaw Sr.:2

Smith Hanshaw was born in Virginia, and went to Ohio about 1823, where he engaged in farming.  He married Mary Stewart, who was born in Virginia, and they reared the following children: Lovinia; Harriet; William R.; Elizabeth A.; John; Richard H.; Smith M.; Vail; Stewart; and Eliza J.;
