Tillie Marie (Pemberton) Hinshaw
December 25, 1930 - October 12, 2016
Spring Branch, Texas | Age 85

Tillie Marie (Pemberton) Hinshaw, 85, of Spring Branch, TX, passed away in her home on Wednesday, October 12, 2016.

She was born on December 25, 1930 at home in Salesville, TX to Lillie Mae (Moore) Pemberton and Washington McKee Pemberton.  When she was in the 5th grade, Tillie gave her life to God and was baptized in the nearby creek.  With her faith and family, she weathered the tumultuous years of World War II.  After her family moved to Mineral Wells in 1944, Tillie studiously applied herself and was able to graduate high school in three years, while still finding time for basketball and tennis.  Among 106 students, she was named salutatorian.  She celebrated her achievement with her new fiancé, W. F. "Short" Hinshaw.  The two married on June 27th, 1947 and soon, they welcomed into the world one daughter, Nita, and two years later, another daughter, Penny.  Around the time when the girls started school, Tillie began her studies at Weatherford College, before going to Texas Christian University on scholarship.  She graduated in 1959 and began teaching fifth grade students at David Crockett Elementary.  She continued to teach for 28 years before retiring.

From early on, Tillie had enjoyed watching all forms of sports.  She became a devoted Dallas Cowboys and TCU fan and liked watching golf.  Texas landscapes, American Indian history, and wide open spaces always captured Tillie's imagination.  She loved to go on family vacations to Colorado and out West or up to Alaska.  She also liked being in nature where she could put her green thumb to good use by planting vegetables, berries, and flowers.  Tillie was a doer -- in the garden, on the farm, and at the sewing machine.  She found such joy in crafting gifts and quilts for loved ones and friends, sharing happiness with others as she had done over many a Christmas birthday.  Sewing and craft-making came easily to her.  She hadn't even needed a pattern to cut out the fabric for her daughter Nita's wedding gown.  For several years in retirement, she made a modest earning with her "Texas Treasures by Tillie" line of dolls and decorative items.

As the eldest child, Tillie had known how to corral all the kids.  This skill came in handy later in life when she, along with kin and cousins, gathered regularly for big reunions.  The whole family loved Tillie's cooking and swapped recipes to keep her culinary traditions going.  Family history was important to her.  With her daughter, Nita, she collected family stories and made copies to share with everyone.  She had even included all the dogs she and her daughters had through the years.  Her interest in the wellbeing of others shows in these chronicles.  Tillie's remembrances of a family with strong roots became a lasting gift and a testament of her love.

Family and friends will gather for a meal on Monday, October 17, at 12 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, located at 910 N. Main St. in Weatherford, TX.  The graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. at Clark Cemetery, 1394 Friendship Rd. in Weatherford, with Rev. Michael Howard officiating.

Tillie was preceded in death by husband Winston Frederick Hinshaw; daughter Penny Hinshaw Tressler; brother Rev. Donald Wayne Pemberton and sister-in-law Dubby Hedges Pemberton; brother Jay Will Pemberton; parents Wash and Lillie Mae Pemberton; great-grandchildren Miranda, Graysen and Payden.

She is survived by daughter Nita Hinshaw Harrell and son-in-law Richard (Rick) Harrell; son-in-law Samuel Tressler, III; sister Rosemary Pemberton Wright and brother-in-law James Wright; sister-in-law Jackie Moore Pemberton; grandsons Ryan Harrell, Rustin Harrell, and Nikolaus Tressler; granddaughter Gretchen Tressler; and great-grandchildren Charlotte, Mackenzie, Temperance, Allyssa, Hailey, Hannah, Ethan, and Emma.
