John Arthur Hinshaw1 [John Henshaw3].

Born Jun 14 1830, Skinners Burn, near Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England.1  (c1840, England).4  

He married Eliza Woodford1,3 [Elizabeth Woodford2], Sep 7 18541,3, St. Nicholas Church, Deptford, London, England1,3.  Marriage witnessed by Tho. Walter Moore (or Moon) and Ann Earl.1  Eliza, daughter of William Woodford, was born 1828, London, Middlesex, England.1,2  

John was a boiler maker or bridge maker.1  He was also a deacon in the Church of England.1  

John left England for America about 1855-60, leaving his wife and children in England.1  He is believed to have gone to work on the Brooklyn Bridge (or to help transport items for the bridge).1  He never returned and was never heard from again.1  

Eliza then moved from Blackfriars in London to the North in 1860.1  

Eliza and son James were shown in the 1881 census, 15 Watson St., Gateshead, Durham:2

Elizabeth Henshaw, head-of-household, age 52, born London, Middlesex; widow; occupation: "Anuitant".
James Henshaw, son, age 21, born London Lambeth, London, Middlesex; single; occupation: Labourer.
Thomas Denny, lodger, age 21, born Norfolk; occupation: Butcher.
Thomas White, lodger, age 48, born Scotland; occupation: Blacksmith.
Francis Hebone, lodger, age 21, born Scotland; occupation: Labourer.
James Duffy, lodger, age 22, born Scotland; occupation: Labourer.

Eliza died Sep - 1898, buried Tyne Road East, Gateshead, England.1  

Meanwhile a John Henshaw (probably this John Arthur Hinshaw) was shown in the 1880 census (Jun 2 1880), living alone as a boarder in 465 [unclear] West 14th Street, Manhattan, New York City, New York:4

McLean, Margaret, wife, age 44, born in Scotland; parents born in Scotland; married; keeps house.
McLean, Agnes, daughter, age 12, born in Scotland; parents born in Scotland; single; attended school.
McLean, Jessie, daughter, age 10, born in Scotland; parents born in Scotland; single; attended school.
McLean, Elizabeth, daughter, age 8, born in Scotland; parents born in Scotland; single; attended school.
Henshaw, John, boarder, age 40, born in England; parents born in England; married; occupation: iron molder.
Dickinson, John, boarder, age 20, born in England; parents born in England; single; occupation: iron molder.
Allen, Earnest, boarder, age 19, born in New York; parents born in England; single; occupation: appr. to iron molder.
Reach, John, boarder, age 36, born in Germany; parents born in Germany; married; occupation: wood yard.
Reach, S., wife, age 30, born in Germany; parents born in Germany; married; keeps house.
Note that in the 1880/1881 time period John considered himself married (although he had no wife with him),4 but Elizabeth called herself a widow.2
