Marion H. Thayer

Marion H. Thayer, 93, died August 1, 2007, at Hilltop Haven Nursing Home in Gunter.  Funeral services will be held later in East Aurora, NY.

Arrangements are under the direction of Dannel Funeral Home.

Mrs. Thayer was born September 5, 1913, in East Aurora, NY, to Harry and Lucy McGee Henshaw.  After graduating from high school in East Aurora, she attended the College of Wooster in Ohio and became the second generation in her family to complete a degree there.  She returned to East Aurora and worked as a bank teller until she met William J. Arnold and they were married on June 13, 1941.  Mr. Arnold was in training as a bomber pilot, and he went to the European Theater in May 1944, flying a mission on D-Day.  Their first son, Bruce, was born while his father was serving overseas in WWII.

After the war ended, Mrs. Arnold accompanied her husband to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, where he studied aeronautical engineering on the GI bill.  Their second child, Bill, was born two days after the sudden death of Mr. Arnold on November 27, 1946.

As a widow Mrs. Arnold supported her family in East Aurora by working as a pre-school teacher and then returned to banking.  In 1956 she moved to Clearwater, FL. In 1967 she married Carlyle Thayer, and upon his retirement in 1972 they enjoyed several years of travel all over the US with a fifth-wheel trailer.  After his death Mrs. Thayer lived in Florida with her son Bruce until 1994, when they moved to Lewiston, OR.  A lifelong Presbyterian, Mrs. Thayer was active in the senior group at the Congregational Presbyterian Church of Lewiston and enjoyed many activities and excursions there.

Mrs. Thayer moved to Sherman with her son Bruce when he began teaching at Austin College in the summer of 2001.  They were members of First Presbyterian Church, Denison, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Evelyn Roehl.

Survivors include brother Ab Henshaw of East Aurora, NY; son Bruce Arnold of Sherman; son William Arnold and wife Sue of Boise, ID; grandchildren Tracy Dasher of Lakeland, FL; Amy Harvey of Wake Forest, NC; David Arnold of Meridian, ID; and Christy Arnold of Irvine, CA; and six great-grandchildren.
