Nathan Hinshaw2,8,9 [Nathan Henshaw10,11,12,13].

Born about 1824, Tennessee.9,10,14  (c1826, Alabama).2

Nathan was shown in the 1850 census (Sep 3 1850), living in the household of Henry & Eliza Crawford in Franklin County, Tennessee:9

Nathan Hinshaw, age 26, born in Tennessee; farmer.
This was the family of Eliza J. Hinshaw #2487, who married Henry J. Crawford in Franklin County, Tennesse in 1839.10,15  It is likely that Eliza was probably Nathan's sister.16

He married Sarah Burks10,11,12,17 [Sarah Burk8,18], Jan 2 185510,11,12,17, Franklin County, Tennessee10,11,12,17.  Marriage performed by Wiley Denson, J.P.11  Sarah, daughter of Edward Burke & Elisabeth Faris, was born about 1830.8,14,18  (c1827, Tennessee).2,3

Nathan and family were shown in the 1860 census (Jul 7 1860), Franklin County, Tennessee:2

Nathan Hinshaw, age 34, born in Alabama; farmer; $1500 real estate; $3330 personal property.
Sarah Hinshaw, age 32, born in Tennessee.
Walter Hinshaw, age 4, born in Tennessee.
Frances Hinshaw, age 2, born in Tennessee.
Alice Hinshaw, age 6 months, born in Tennessee.
Slaves:19
1 black male, age 32.
1 black male, age 8.
1 black female, age 5.
1 slave house.
Living next door in 1860 was the family of Eliza J. (Hinshaw) Crawford #2487.20

In 1860 this Nathan Hinshaw family was the only known Hinshaw/Henshaw family in Franklin County, Tennessee.

During the Civil War, Nathan served as a private in Company E, 45th Tennessee Infantry (Confederate)21,22,23,24 (Company A, 23rd Battalion, aka "Newman's Battalion", Tennessee Infantry).14  He was captured on Nov 24 1863 at Chattanooga, Tennessee by the forces under the command of Major General Thomas.14  He was sent as a POW to Nashville, then to the POW camp at Rock Island, Illinois.14

Nathan Hinshaw died Feb 22 1864, Union prison camp, Rock Island, Illinois; buried Section A Lot 575, Rock Island Confederate Cemetery, Rodman Avenue, Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Rock Island County, Illinois.13,22,23  Medical: Nathan died from pneumonia.14

Sarah remarried to a Pearce Wilhoit, Dec 30 1867, Franklin County, Tennessee.10,12,17

Sarah and family were shown in the 1870 census (Aug 1870), Franklin County, Tennessee:3

Wilhite, Pierce, age 64, born in North Carolina; farmer; $3500 real estate; $1000 personal property.
Wilhite, Sallie, age 43, born in Tennessee.
Wilhite, Walter H., age 14, born in Tennessee.
Wilhite, Joseph, age 8, born in Tennessee.
Wilhite, Nathan, age 6, born in Tennessee.

Sarah and family were shown in the 1880 census (Jun 18 1880), Franklin County, Tennessee:5

Wilhout, Sarah, age 51, born in Tennessee; father born in Virginia; mother born in Tennessee; widow; keeping house.
Wilhout, Joseph, son, age 18, born in Tennessee; father born in Alabama; mother born in Tennessee; single; working on farm; cannot write.
Living immediately next door in 1880 was the household of William Wilhoit, age 42.25  Since he was living immediately next door, it might be assumed that he was closely related, but he was only 9 years younger than Sarah (this seems to indicate a likely previous marriage for Pearce Wilhoit).

Sarah died Dec 12 1898, aged 68 years.8,14,18  Sarah's gravestone is inscribed "Asleep in Jesus".8

Buried immediately next to Sarah in Green Cemetery is son Joseph Jefferson Hinshaw, 1861-1944.8,26  Also buried elsewhere in Green Cemetery is Eliza J. Hinshaw (1822-1859),8,27 who might be closely related.16

Relatives in this family line are known to live in the area of Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee.1

Speculation: Nathan might have been a son of William Hinshaw & Jane Hamm, whose sons William and Thomas settled in Jackson County, Alabama.  Son William was married in Franklin County, Tennessee in 1844.  Nathan, and also Eliza, were possibly additional childen of William Hinshaw & Jane Hamm.16
