On Jul 2 1861 in Wythe County, Virginia, Samuel Hanshew, age 21, a resident of Tazewell County, Virginia, enlisted in Company C, 50th Virginia Infantry.¹¹ He was furloughed on Nov 1 1861 at Tazewell County (sick leave).¹¹ He was again furloughed for 21 days at the end of the war, approximately Apr 1 1865, at Tazewell County.^11,12 Samuel's brothers Charles and William also enlisted in the same Company.¹¹

Samuel Hanshew died Apr 26 1916, buried Kimberling Church Cemetery, north of Rural Retreat, Wythe County, Virginia.^2,6

Widow Elizabeth was shown in the 1920 census (Jan 10 1920), still living in the household of daughter Cannie (Hanshew) Hill and her family in Smyth County, Virginia:¹⁵

Elizabeth Hanshew died Sep 15 1935, Wythe County, Virginia; buried Kimberling Church Cemetery, north of Rural Retreat, Wythe County, Virginia.^1,2,6
