Born Feb 15 1840, Tazewell County, Virginia.1,6,7,8,9  (c1842).10  

On Jul 2 1861 in Wythe County, Virginia, Samuel Hanshew, age 21, a resident of Tazewell County, Virginia, enlisted in Company C, 50th Virginia Infantry.11  He was furloughed on Nov 1 1861 at Tazewell County (sick leave).11  He was again furloughed for 21 days at the end of the war, approximately Apr 1 1865, at Tazewell County.11,12  Samuel's brothers Charles and William also enlisted in the same Company.11  

He married Elizabeth Hanshew, Mar 27 1861.1,13  Elizabeth Hanshew was born Jun 19 1844.14  (Jun 18 1845).6
