During the Civil War, Charles Hanshew enlisted as a private in Company C, 50th Virginia Infantry.⁹ He claimed his residence as Tazewell County, Virginia.⁹ Charles' brothers Samuel and William also enlisted in the same Company.⁹

He married Rhoda Jane Harman^8,10,11,12 [Rhoda Harmon⁵], Nov 30 1864^8,10,11,12, Tazewell County, Virginia^8,10,11,12. Rhoda, daughter of Wilburn + July Harman, was born Aug - 1845, Virginia.^1,3,4,8,13

On Mar 13 1920 Mrs. Rhoda J. Hanshaw applied for a Confederate pension as widow of Charles Hanshaw who died Feb 14 1920, Portsmouth, Virginia¹¹ (see scan below).

Rhoda died 1934, buried Maple Hill Cemetery, Bluefield, Tazewell County, Virginia.⁴
