The following biographical sketch of Uriah A. Hinshaw was written January 2004 by great grandson Greg Hinshaw:4
Orval Oakley Hinshaw was born on January 23, 1888 in Washington Township, Randolph County, Indiana. He was the youngest of four children of Uriah A. and Mary Elizabeth (Baldwin) Hinshaw. His early youth was spent on his father's farm, on County Road 500 S in Randolph County. About 1904 Orval moved with his father to a new farm on Base Road in Randolph County, near the village of Rural. There, he met Goldie Pearl Retz. They were married at Goldie's parents' home on March 17, 1907 by Rev. Oliver P. Thornburg, pastor of Rural Friends Church. They originally lived on the farm of Meredith Hinshaw. They lived near Martindale Church for a while, apparently east and south of the Buena Vista Corner in 1909, then returned nearer to Rural in the Spring of 1910 (see the Winchester Journal for 3-2-1910). They lived in Washington Township, for several years, having purchased a 40 acre farm (NE NE 17-19-14) from Uriah A. Hinshaw on what is now Road 400 S on November 29, 1915. They were members of Rural Friends Church, where Orval was treasurer of the Sunday School in 1912-1914. Orval also drove a school hack for Washington Township during the 1914-15 school year. They sold the Washington Township farm to R. R. Baldwin on October 27, 1917 and then purchased an 80 acre farm on County Road 600 S (E 1/2 NE 1/4 27-19-13) in West River (now Union) Township on April 10, 1917 from the estate of John H. Butler. Their three sons, Paul, George, and Leary, all attended Huntsville High School. Orval was a farmer and worked at Anchor Hocking in Winchester. He was a very progressive farmer, having had one of the first tractors in West River Township. His bright red Farmall with steel wheels was quite a sight to behold in the early years of the twentieth century.
Orval was a birthright member of Martindale Friends Church and remained a member there until 1904, when he was transferred with his father to Rural Friends Church (White River Monthly Meeting). After Orval and Goldie purchased the West River Township farm, they transferred to Martindale in 1919. Orval remained a member there until death. Their younger children were members of the Elizabeth Stanley Loyal Temperance Legion of Martindale Church. Orval was a charter member of Martindale Monthly Meeting, when the church achieved that status in 1961. He also served as an original elder and trustee of the monthly meeting and was serving in the latter capacity at the time of his death. He was a representative to Indiana Yearly Meeting in 1958. He was a member of the Perserverance Sunday School Class. He was superintendent of the Sunday School in 1939.
Orval qualified for the draft in August 1917, but later the same month he was reported as "exempted". The reason is not clear.
The Great Depression nearly forced Orval and Goldie off of their farm. Family history recalls that Orval went to his banker to tell him that he could no longer make the full payments on his farm mortgage. The banker told Orval to continue to pay what he could, for the partial payments would still be more than the farm would bring if it were resold in the depressed market. About 1944, Orval and Goldie moved to Winchester, where they lived at 518 South Meridian Street. Goldie died on January 31, 1956. Orval then married Pearl A. Morris, a daughter of George and Nancy Jane (Armstrong) Riegle and twice a widow, on June 6, 1956. Pearl died on May 6, 1958, and Orval married a third time on December 3, 1958. His third wife was Lennie (Pierce) Newman Gause, the widow of Frank Gause, a Quaker minister. Lennie was a daughter of Edgar A. and Florence (Mote) Pierce. Lennie died on January 3, 1960.
Orval was a Republican for most of his life, but helped to reorganize the Prohibition Party in Randolph County at mid-century. He was an unsuccessful candidate for White River Township Justice of the Peace on the Prohibition ticket in 1946.
Orval moved to 417 Western Avenue in Winchester after Goldie's death. He died there on July 1, 1961. He is buried in the Fountain Park Cemetery, Winchester, beside his first wife, Goldie.
