On Sep 12 1918 Charles W. Hanshaw, age 32, registered for the World War I draft in Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He declared he was born April 3 1886, and was then residing in Three Mile, Kanawha County, West Virginia where he was employed as a coal hauler.  He declared his nearest relative was Stella Hanshaw of Three Mile.  He was recorded as medium height, medium build, blue eyes, dark hair, with "one finger on left hand off".⁸

Charlie W. Hanshaw The owner of Hanshaw Grocery at Pinch Ridge Charlie W. Hanshaw of Elkview Rt. 3, was dead on arrival yesterday at Charleston General Hospital after a sudden illness.  He was 79.  Mr. Hanshaw was a retired lumberman.  Surviving wife, Stella Alice; sons, Kenneth of Elkview, Ward of Edison, N. J., The Rev. Herman and Homer of Charleston; daughters, Mrs. Delsie Mae Hersman and Mrs. Marie Tofi of Charleston, Mrs. Freda Morton of Elkview; brother, Henry of Hurricane; half brother, Andrew Compton of Dunbar; sisters, Mrs. Ella Couch of Elkview Rt. 3, Mrs. Nina Coutz and Mrs. Betty Summerfield of Charleston, Mrs. Edna Peckham of Gibsonia, Pa., Mrs. Minnie McDonie of Ferndale. Mich.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild.  The service will be held in Hafer Funeral Home at Elk 1, view tomorrow at 2 p. m.  Burial will be in Hanshaw Cemetery at Pinch Ridge.

Stella died May - 1980.¹¹
