12 Pounds Of
Coffee Taken

Mrs. Cleo Hinshaw, manager of the Shady Lawn Diner at 86 Park Avenue West, reported the theft of 12 one-pound bags of coffee from the basement of the diner sometime since Sunday.

Officers who investigated the report could find no signs of forcible entry, they said.

The following letter to the editor was published in the "Mansfield News Journal" (Mansfield, Ohio) on December 30, 1959:13

EDITOR, NEWS-JOURNAL:

I was born in Mansfield, graduated there, and operated the Shady Lawn Diner on Park Avenue West.  Through ill health and probably poor management too, I had to sell.  This is all beside the point.  I want the News-Journal to tell the people of Mansfield what truly wonderful people they really are.  I've been in this Veteran's Hospital since Aug. 4 and they have showered me with cards, gifts, remembrances.

I had a serious thyroid operation December 14.  It was successful except I got post operative thrombosis phlebitis or some such thing - blood clots.  So they stood me on my head in bed - literally - on a freshly cut throat - looking at two feet square of ceiling if I gazed as far as I could.  My outlook on the world was much smaller than that - feeling very, very sorry for myself - then the deluge came.  Letters, notes, mail, cards, very gay, festive, friendly and full of love.  That two feet of ceiling became quite large.  I could even see all of Mansfield, the lights, the parks, stores.

I believe Mr. Paul Schultz and Mr. Gene Earick were behind most of it, but I received the same from people with Westinghouse where I had been employed years ago.

So could you please print my thanks to the people of Mansfield.  I love everyone.
