Federal land grant records show a grant in Stanislaus County, California to A. Handshaw on Dec 2 1870, and another to Alexander Handshaw on May 1 1875.¹¹  

He then married Emma Gatzman^3,7,10 [- Gatesman⁷, - Catesman⁷], about 1875^3,7,10.  Emma, daughter of Thomas + E. Gatzman, was born Dec 27 1857, Copperopolis, Calaveras County, California.^{2,3,7,10,12,14,15}  Emma was the sister of Florence Gatzman who married William Hanshaw.¹⁴

Emma's obituary was published in the "Modesto Bee" (Modesto, California) on Jan 7 1950 (page 10):¹⁰

EMMA HANSHAW OF OAKDALE DIES OAKDALE, Jan 7 - Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Monday at the Gordon Jaroch Chapel here for Mrs. Emma Hansahaw [sic], 92, long time resident of the Oakdale area, who died late yesterday at a Salida convalescent home following an extended illness.  Interment will be in Citizens Cemetery, Oakdale.  Mrs. Hanshaw was born Emma Gatzman in Copperopolis December 27, 1857, and had lived in this area all her life.  She was married at 17 to Alexander Hanshaw, a grain farmer, who came from Tennessee when he was 15.  He died in 1917.  They had 11 children, eight of whom are living.   Leaves Eight Children The children are Mrs. Bertie Montgomery and Mrs. Minnie Bentley of Oakdale, Mrs. Eva Koster and Mervyn Hanshaw of Stockton, James Hanshaw of Modesto, Mrs. J. V. Wulff of Sonora, Ernest Hanshaw of San Francisco and Elvin Hanshaw of Redding.  She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Lizzie Watson of Fresno; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
