He married Lena R. -, about 1905.2  Lena was born about 1883, California.2

On Sep 12 1918 James Edward Hanshaw, age 39, registered for the World War I draft in Stanislaus County, California.  He declared he was born March 25 1879, and was then residing at 861 2nd, Oakdale, Stanislaus County, California where he was a foreman employed by Pacific Pea Packing Co. of Oakdale.  He declared his nearest relatives were Audine and Pauline Hanshaw of the same address.  He was recorded as medium height, medium build, blue eyes, light hair.9  

He then married Mary Leah -.6  Mary was born Apr 22 1879, Colorado.4,7  

James lived in Turlock, California.4  

James Edward Hanshaw died Oct 18 1960, Stanislaus County, California; age 81.4,5,6,7  

James' obituary was published in the Modesto Bee (Modesto, California) on October 19, 1960 (pg D2):6

JAMES E. HANSHAW

Funeral services for James Edward Hanshaw, 81, who died here yesterday, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Shannon & Carmody Funeral Chapel.  Hartzell Cobbs, minister of the First Christian Church, will officiate.  Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery.  Hanshaw was a native Californian who had lived in this county all his life.  He was a employee of the City of Modesto parks department for 20 years and was a member of Modesto Neighbors of Woodcraft No. 443.  Hanshaw was the husband of Mary Leah Hanshaw, Modesto; father of Mrs. Pauline Boag, Pittsburg, Contra Costa County, and Mrs. Audine Kirkle, Modesto, and stepfather of Clarence Knott, Vallejo, Solano County.  He was the brother of Mrs. Bertie Montgomery, Oakdale, Mrs. Minnie Bently, Mrs. Eva Koster, Mervin Hanshaw and Mrs. Ruby Wolff, all of Stockton, Ernest Hanshaw, San Francisco and Elvis Hanshaw, Redding, Shasta County.  He also is survived by five grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Mary died Jul 29 1965, Modesto, Stanislaus County, California; age 86.4,7,12

MARY LEAH HANSHAW

Mary Leah Hanshaw, 86, of Modesto died yesterday in a local nursing home following a long illness.  A native of Colorado, she had lived in Modesto 60 years and had been a member of Neighbors of Woodcraft of Modesto.  She is survived by a son, Clarence F. Knott of Vallejo, Solano County; two sisters, Mabel Hy7nes and Dole Bates, both of Modesto; a half sister, Mildred Eller of Washington; a half brother, Simeon Beeson of Washington; two stepdaughters, Pauline Boge of Pittsburg, Contra Costa County, and Audine Kircle of Modesto; 10 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.  Services will be held at 1:30 PM tomorrow in the Franklin & Downs Funeral Home and burial will be in the Acacia Memorial Park.
