In 2003 Richard and Bonnie were living in Middletown, Henry County, Indiana.9

April 4, 1938 - March 23, 2010

MIDDLETOWN -- Richard "Dick" Hinshaw, 71, of Middletown, went to be with his Lord early Tuesday morning, March 23, 2010, surrounded by his loved ones.  He passed away at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.  

He was born April 4, 1938, in New Castle, the son of Herschel and Eva (Van Demis) Hinshaw.  Dick was a retired employee of Avesta (formerly Ingersol) Steel in New Castle, retiring in 1996 after over 28 years of service.  

He loved riding motorcycles.  He and his wife, Bonnie, traveled all across the United States at different times on their motorcycle.  He was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association.  He also loved gardening, NASCAR, the Colts, riding around in his golf cart and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.  

Dick was best known for his race driving and was a local legend for his racing.  He raced stock cars and figure-8 cars.  He was a crowd favorite at Muncie, Anderson, Winchester and Mount Lawn speedways.  He also raced at Whitewater and Eldora speedways.  He was among the top five drivers invited to participate in the Louisville, Ky. Invitational.  During his 33 years of competition, he won many events, including the National Crown Championship for Figure 8 cars in 1974.  He also was Point Champion three times for the Figure 8s and was ranked second overall in terms of all-time achievements.  Dick also ranked third for all-time wins at Mount Lawn and was inducted into the Mount Lawn Hall of Fame in 2008.  During his racing career, which spanned from 1960-1993, he also raced stock cars in the prestigious ASA (American Speed Association) series.  He retired from figure-8 competition in 1985.  

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Bonnie (Burroughs) Hinshaw, whom he married June 21, 1958; one daughter, Rita (husband, Bobby) Westrater of Middletown; two sons, Randy Hinshaw of Fort Wayne and Rick (wife, Lea) Hinshaw of Oaklandon; nine grandchildren, Ricky (wife, April) Hinshaw of Ossian, Ryan (companion, Jessica) Hinshaw of Indianapolis, Shan (wife, Erica) Willis of Scotts Air Force Base, Ill., Katie (fiance, A.J.) Hinshaw of Pendleton, Randy Hinshaw II of Fortville, Madison Hinshaw of Lewisville, Trevor Westrator of Middletown and Shane and Krissy Reynolds of Oaklandon; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carolyn (husband, Gary) Grim and Dorothy Ryan, all of New Castle; five brothers, Gerald (wife, Tiny) Hinshaw of Mooreland, Bill (wife, Jo) Hinshaw of New Castle, Harold Hinshaw of New Castle, Joe (wife, Marlene) Hinshaw of Losantville and Carl (wife, Vicki) Hinshaw of New Castle; two "Honorary" daughters, Debra Simmons of Muncie and Wendy (husband, Darrell) Hall of Middletown; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends also survive.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Betty Dick, Bess Austin, Margaret Sweigart and Eula Mae Dick; and two brothers, Charlie and Bob Hinshaw.  

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Mount Summit Christian Church, Mount Summit, with the Rev. Mark O'Brien officiating.  

Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church.  Cremation will follow.  

Main and Davis Funeral Home, Astor Main Blue River Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Bonnie Jean Hinshaw

Middletown...Bonnie Jean Hinshaw, 75, resident of Middletown, passed away at her daughter's residence iin [sic] Middletown after an extended illness.  

She was born in Mooreland, Indiana, October 26, 1940, the daughter of Bernard Leon and Mary Elizabeth Hellard Burroughs.  

She retired from Dana Corporation in 1990 after 22 years of service.  

She was a member of the Goldwing Club and loved reading, riding motor cycles, camping, stock car racing especially late models.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Richard Hinshaw Sr., a son: Richard "Rick" Hinshaw, Jr. and a special Aunt: Jewel Atkins.  

Survivors include her children: Randy Hinshaw of Louisville, KY and Rita (Bobby) Westrater of Middletown, honorary daughter: Debra Simmons of Muncie, 1 brother: Jerry Lee Burroughs (Elizabeth) of Dunreith, a special cousin: Pat Mahaffey, 9 grandchildren: Ricky Hinshaw, Shan Willis, Ryan Hinshaw (Jessica), Katie Brown (AJ), Randy Hinshaw, II, James Womack, Trevor Westrater (Madi), Madison Hinshaw, Michelle Sheets (Toby) and 8 great grandchildren.  

A Celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 118 South 5th, Middletown with Pastor Dan Heylmann officiating.  Burial will follow in Mooreland Cemetery.  

Friends may call on Monday from 5-8 PM at the funeral home.  

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donors choice.
