Local real estate developer Nathaniel 'Nat' Henshaw dies

He is credited with bringing many commercial and housing projects to fruition.

Nathaniel DeWitt "Nat" Henshaw, a Tulsa real estate developer, died Sunday.  He was 82.

It was Henshaw's wish that his family not have a funeral service for him, his son Blaine Henshaw said.  Stanleys Funeral Service is handling his cremation.

Born in Madill in 1922, Henshaw moved with his family to Tulsa when he was 16.  He graduated from Central High School and attended Oklahoma A&M College for two years before serving in the military during World War II.

During his time in the Army, Henshaw became a flight instructor for various aircraft.

After the war, he received a bachelor of arts degree in business from the University of Tulsa in 1948.

He then began managing his family's lumber business.  During his 18 years as the company's manager, he began his career as a real estate developer.

Henshaw bought land at 43rd Street and Hudson Avenue in 1959 and developed it into residential property.  He later purchased about 235 acres at 51st Street and Mingo Road.

Over a 40-year period, Henshaw developed several housing projects, a few commercial and industrial sites and properties in Colorado.

His housing developments include Burning Tree, Cardinal Crest, Cross Creek, Fairfax, Fairfax South, Fairfield, Hidden Hill, Pecan Grove, Regency Park, Slate Creek, The Trees and Valley South.

His commercial properties include the Henshaw Industrial Park in Broken Arrow.

In 1964, he was named chairman of the land development committee of the Tulsa Home Builders Association.  In 1973, he was made a director of North Side State Bank, which his father helped found.

Throughout his career, Henshaw was involved in the Home Builders Association, the Urban Land Institute, and area land and water planning committees.

He served on the boards of Tulsa Opera and Northside State Bank.  He was active in the Tulsa Men's Club, the Tulsa Metro Chamber of Commerce and various other civic organizations.

Henshaw was part of the group that successfully preserved the Council Oak tree.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Henshaw of Tulsa; a daughter, Janine VanValkenburgh of Tulsa; two sons, Todd Henshaw and Blaine Henshaw, both of Tulsa; and seven grandchildren.
