CLAY CENTER -- Cleve "Buck" Reed, 90, Clay Center, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2001 [sic], at a Clay Center hospital. Mr. Reed worked for the city of Clay Center from 1935 to 1937 and then served as Clay Center street commissioner from 1937 until he retired in 1985.
He was born July 14, 1911, in Lasita, the son of George and Ida Pfortmiller Reed. He was raised in the May Day area and attended rural schools.
Mr. Reed was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and the Eagles Aerie, both in Clay Center. He also was a volunteer firefighter in the Clay Center area for 39 years.
He married Bertha Mae Hinshaw on Dec. 24, 1931. She died Feb. 8, 1971. He married Arlene Mabie on June 1, 1972. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Don Reed and Larry Reed, both of Clay Center; a daughter, Bonnie McChesney, Clay Center; two stepsons, Bill O'Donnell, Schaumburg, Ill., and Pat O'Donnell Denton, Texas; a stepdaughter, Gail Hileman, Clay Center; a brother, Paul Reed, Clay Center; a sister, Patricia Pittenger, Clay Center; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Chapel in Clay Center. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center. Mr. Reed will lie in state from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to the Cleve "Buck" Reed Memorial Fund to be designated by the family later and sent in care of the funeral home.
