He married Ida Letitia Bushong^{1,4,9,17,18,19} [Ida Bushing²], May 15 1897^{1,4,9,17,18,19} [May 18 1897^3,13,15, May 18 1897^4,17], Jefferson County, Iowa^{1,4,9,17,18,19}.  Ida, daughter of Joseph Long Bushong & Lydia Ann Zaring^{3,7,19,20,21,22,23} [Joseph Bershong & Lydia Zoring¹³], was born Jan 24 1881^{3,7,19,20,21,22,23}, Fremont, Mahaska County, Iowa^{3,7,19,20,21,22,23} [North Carolina⁶].  

Ida's maternal grandmother (Lydia's mother) was Nancy Martha Little, aunt of Martha Ann Little who married Jesse Raines Hinshaw.¹⁹  

Milas and family were shown in the 1900 census (Jun 6 1900), 55 Main, Windsor, Bertie County, North Carolina:⁶

Milas and family initially lived near Windsor, North Carolina.³  In 1908³ (1911),²⁴ Milas and family moved to a sage-covered homestead near Greenleaf, Canyon County, Idaho³ (a small rural town about 30 miles west of the capitol city of Boise).  

The following article was published in "The Ottumwa Courier" (Ottumwa, Iowa) on Thursday, April 2, 1903:²⁵

Woolson ...   Milace Hinshaw and family, who have been visiting friends here for a few days, returned to their home in Iowa Falls the first of the week.

At Richland MM on 12-7-1907, Miles, Ida B., and children Ezra Bushing, Horton Corwin & Lalita Zaring were received by request.^1,26  

At Richland MM on 4-3-1909, Milo [sic], Ida B., and children Ezra B., Horton C., & Lolita Z. were granted a certificate to Greenleaf MM, Idaho.^1,26  

Milas and family were shown in the 1910 census (May 13 1910), Greenleaf, Canyon County, Idaho:⁷

On Sep 12 1918, Milas Clark Hinshaw, age 45, registered for the World War I draft in Caldwell, Canyon County, Idaho.  He declared he was born Mar 1 1873, and he then resided in Greenleaf, Canyon County, Idaho where he was a farmer.  He declared his nearest relative was Mrs. Ida B. Hinshaw of Greenleaf.  He was recorded as tall, slender, hazel eyes, black hair.¹⁴  Son Ezra also registered on the same day.¹⁴  

On Nov 21 1919 Milas Clark Hinshaw was issued a U.S. passport.  He declared he was born March 1st 1873 near Woolson, Iowa, and his father, Ezra Hinshaw was born in Indiana and was then "not living".  Milas declared he was then residing in Wilder, Idaho, occupied as a farmer.  He declared he intended to depart Dec 15th 1919 from the port of Key West, Florida, intending to visit Cuba for the purpose of "business".  He also declared "Was in Cuba about 12 years ago, had no passport".  He was recorded as age 46, 5' 10 1/2" tall, gray eyes, dark brown hair, medium complexion, square face, prominent chin, "Roman" nose, and "mole on left side of nose".¹²

Ida was a prominent church worker, and was also a member of the D.A.R.³  She was an early member of the Missionary Society of Greenleaf.²⁸  

Milas owned a large orchard in Greenleaf, Idaho, where he raised apples.²⁹  A history of Greenleaf, Idaho notes:³⁰

"The Extension Service, which was started in Idaho in 1911, claims a share in the honor given the county (Canyon County) along agricultural lines.  Marion Cook, according to Clayton Brown, was the first man under this project to set out apple trees.  Clayton assisted him in getting the orchard started.  Others began planting family and small orchards of a variety of fruits, but the expense and time consuming care proved to be too much for most of the farmers who wanted to raise other crops such as grains, hay, seeds, and row crops.  Milas Hinshaw, however, stayed with the apples until he succeeded in owning the first commercial apple orchard, and the popular Hinshaw apples were shipped by carloads to other states.  He led the way with apples".

Milas also worked briefly for the railroad (when he was young) as a telegraph operator.²⁹  

An election was held September 30, 1941, for the organization of a cemetery district for the Greenleaf area.  The election carried without a dissenting vote and in January, 1942, Chase Clark, Governor of Idaho, appointed the commissioners, one for each of the sub-districts that had been formed.  Sarah Crew was appointed from District Number 1, Milas Hinshaw from District 2, and William Benedict from District 3.  From them, Milas Hinshaw was elected president.³¹  

Ida died Oct 7 1942, Boise, Ada County, Idaho; buried Greenleaf Cemetery, Greenleaf, Canyon County, Idaho.^{3,5,21,22,23,32}  

Ida's obituary was published in the "Caldwell News-Tribune" on October 7, 1942:^21,33

Mrs. Hinshaw Dies In Boise Early Today Ida Bushong Hinshaw, 61, prominent resident of the Greenleaf community and wife of Milas C. Hinshaw died at a Boise hospital early this morning.   Born at Freemont, Iowa, January 24, 1881, Mrs. Hinshaw came with her family from Iowa Falls, Iowa to Greenleaf in 1907.  She was a life long member of the Friends church and was an active member of Pocahontas Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.   Survivors besides her husband are two sons, Ezra B. Hinshaw of Boise; H. Corwin Hinshaw of Rochester, Minn.; a daughter, Lolita Hinshaw Gundry of Casper, Wyo.; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Whetzel, Gresham, Ore.; Mrs. Emma Harper of Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren.  A daughter, Miss Viola Hinshaw died February 13, 1940.   Funeral services will be held at the Peckham chapel Friday at 2:30 p. m.  Burial will be in the Greenleaf cemetery.

Ida's obituary was also published in the "Mason City Globe-Gazette" (Mason City, Iowa) on Friday, November 13, 1942:³⁴

FORMER IOWA FALLS WOMAN DIES IN IDAHO Iowa Falls --- News comes from Caldwell, Idaho, of the recent death of Mrs. Ida Bushong Hinshaw, 61, wife of M. C. Hinshaw, a former employee of the Rock Island railroad here.  She died in a hospital at Boise, Idaho after a brief illness.  She was born at Fremont, Iowa and was married to Mr. Hinshaw at Pleasant Plains in 1897.  She was active in the Friends church and other organizations.   Mrs. Hinshaw is survived by her husband, two sons and a daughter.  Burial was in Caldwell with services conducted by the pastor of the Friends church at Greenleaf, Idaho.

Ida's obituary was also published in "The American Friend" on February 25, 1943 (page 82).³²

M.C. Hinshaw, 82, Succumbs; Rites Saturday Greenleaf - Milas Clark Hinshaw, 82, prominent apple grower, died this morning at his home here.   He was born March 1, 1873 at Woolson, Iowa.   He grew up in Iowa and married Ida Bushong, May 18, 1887, at Pleasant Plains, Iowa.  He came to Idaho from Iowa in 1908 and homesteaded near Greenleaf.  Mrs. Hinshaw died Feb. 13, 1942 [sic].   Services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Peckham-Dakan Chapel with Rev. Oscar Brown of the Greenleaf church officiating, assisted by Dr. H. H. Hayman of Caldwell.  He was a member of the Greenleaf church.  Interment will be in the Greenleaf cemetery.   Mr. Hinshaw is survived by two sons, Ezra Hinshaw of Whittier, Calif., and Dr. H. Corwin Hinshaw of San Francisco, Calif., and a daughter, Lolita Gundry, Brawley, Calif.  One daughter, Viola, died in 1940.  Eight grandchildren also survive.

A history of Greenleaf, Idaho includes a short sketch on this family:²⁴

Milas and Ida Hinshaw came from Weiser, Idaho.  They had three children - two sons, Ezra and Corwin, and one daughter, Lolita.  They took up a homestead near the grade school.  Another daughter, Viola, was born to them after they came to Greenleaf.  Ezra was the founder of Hinshaw's Arcadia (department stores) in Pasadena [sic] and Whittier, California.  Corwin became a noted research doctor in the cancer field and was with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  He is credited with discovering the pyorrhea germ.  Lolita married Norman Gundry.  They went to Africa and served many years as missionaries there.  She had a beautiful voice and played the piano and accordion.  Viola was a well-known teacher writer in Idaho and in England.  Several of her articles from England were published in the Boise (Idaho) Capital News.  She was an accomplished pianist.
