Maxine Grace Rackaway

Maxine Grace Rackaway, 90, of Mt. Vernon died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at Telford Terrace in Richmond, Ky., where she had resided since November of 2007.  Mrs. Rackaway was born July 4, 1918, in Rose Hill, Kan., and grew up on a farm in western Colorado, near Grand Junction.  Her parents were Merritt and Effie Hinshaw.  She attended Fruita High School and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1939 as an English major.  She married John E. Rackaway (1917-1998) on Sept. 6, 1941, in Leesville, La.  Mrs. Rackaway began her career as an English teacher in Colorado during World War II and continued her profession for more than 20 years as a language arts teacher at Summersville Grade School in Mt.Vernon.  For several years she gave private piano instruction.  She was an avid golfer, an accomplished pianist, a much loved teacher and a friend to all who knew her.  She was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority, The First Methodist Church and for many years was active in local women’s organizations.  Mrs. Rackaway is survived by daughters, Joan Mott of Irvine, Ky., and Gwen Bourque of Kewanee.  Her eldest daughter, Pamela Smith, wife of Larry Smith of Mt. Vernon, passed away in 2005.  She leaves 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  Her sister, Gwendolyn, and her brother, Merritt, Jr., preceded her in death.  Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.  Graveside services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. David Eadie officiating.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and will be accepted at the funeral home, or from the online obituary at www.hugheyfuneralhome.com, or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O.
