Jean Hamilton Henshaw Metcalfe
Jean Hamilton Henshaw Metcalfe passed away on Monday, May 14, 2012. She was a resident of Charlottesville, Virginia.
She was born on December 9, 1923, in New York City, and was the middle of three girls.
As a child she attended Chapin and then Oldfields School in Maryland, as a boarder. She graduated from a medical secretary school where she exceled at shorthand and typing.
She worked in private practice and was affiliated with the Lenox Hill Hospital. At her mother's urging, she applied for a job as secretary in the diplomatic corps and was assigned to the United States Embassy in Laos. It was there that she met her husband, United States State Department employee, Richard J. Metcalfe, at a dinner party.
In her married life, she lived in Jordan, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Reston. She had just celebrated 52 years of marriage. She was fond of dancing, tennis, ocean swimming, and being a working girl. She will be remembered for her sly wink, beautiful smile, and lovely singing voice; her pride in her children; her fondness for Old New York and Edgartown; her tendency to indulge dogs and her chocolate souffles. She is survived by daughter, Susan MacKinnon Metcalfe of Alexandria, Virginia; son, William Hamilton Henshaw Metcalfe of Denver, Colorado; and a grandson, Colton Metcalfe Haney.
Private services were held in Chilmark, Massachusetts.
