He married Mary Adeline Davis6,7 [Adaline Davis2,3], Jun 22 18486,7, Orange County, Virginia6,7.  Mary was born about 1828, Virginia.6  

John and Mary were shown in the 1850 census (Sep 3 1850), Oldham County, Kentucky:8

Jno [S or T or I - unclear] Henshaw, age 23, born in Kentucky; farmer; $9,100 real estate.
Mary Henshaw, age 22, born in Virginia.
Wm A Eddy, age 17, born in Virginia; laborer.
Living nearby in 1850 was widow Sarah Henshaw with her daughters9 (Sarah is thought to have been John's mother).10  Living next door to Sarah Henshaw was the family of Wm A. Eddy (shown age 16 with his family).11  

The 1850 Slave Schedule also shows:12

John S. Henshaw:
1 male black slave age 35.
1 male black slave age 30.
1 female black slave age 20.
1 female black slave age 18.
1 female black slave age 18.
1 male black slave age 10.
1 male black slave age 11.
1 male black slave age 2.

He then married Ann E. Cole13 [Anna E. Cole1,3,7], Nov 28 185413, Orange County, Virginia13.  Ann was born about 1831, Virginia.1  

John and family were shown in the 1860 census (Jul 5 1860), Oldham County, Kentucky:1

Jno Henshaw, age 32, born in Virginia; farmer; $22,500 real estate; $19,000 personal property.
Ann Henshaw, age 29, born in Virginia.
Philip Henshaw, age 9, born in Kentucky.
Edwd Rogers, age 6, born in Virginia.
Living nearby in 1860 was widow Sarah Henshaw with her daughters14 (Sarah is thought to have been John's mother).10  

John and son were shown in the 1870 census (Jul 1 1870), Oldham County, Kentucky:4

Henshaw, John S., age 44, born in Kentucky; farmer; $40,000 real estate; $5,000 personal property.
Henshaw, Philip F., age 20, born in Kentucky; attended school.
Living very close by in 1870 was the family of (apparently widowed) Adaline Woolfolk, 58.15
