Addie lived almost 33 years after John's death; she was blind the last 20-30 years of her life due to cataracts. He daughter Cora "Topsy" was her caregiver for many years. Addie was an avid NASCAR and Richard Petty fan. Petty lives in Randleman, North Carolina, not far from where Addie lived in Greensboro. Perhaps due to her blindness one of her favorite pastimes was listening to the stock car races on the radio. If for some reason Richard Petty had to drop out of the race she would reach over and turn the radio off. She did this for many years. Word of this reached the media, and eventually Richard Petty. On Addie's 100th birthday Richard Petty and the local TV station paid her a visit at her home and presented her with gifts and a large autographed picture. It was a thrill for her to meet him.24
