Former Sonora resident Phyllis Louise Ames Hanshaw Lawyer died Sept. 18 from injuries sustained in a car accident on Highway 12 in Lodi. She was 84.
Born in Roseville to Earl Ames and Naoma Lucas Robertson, her family moved to Sonora in the late 1930s. She graduated from Sonora High School in 1945.
She married Charles "Chuck" Hanshaw in 1948. The couple settled in Modesto, where she worked as a telephone operator for the state hospital system for 30 years. She worked for the Great Valley Center until the time of her death.
After her husband died in 1976, she went on to marry Jim Quick and later Jay Lawyer.
She was a member of the Dixieland Jazz Society. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, wine tasting, cooking and dining.
She is survived by her children, Ames Hanshaw, of Modesto, and Leslie Voyles, of Farmington, Mo.; grandchildren, Nathan Norbeck, of Confidence, and Erin Douglas, Shannon Berger, and Sean and Eileen Voyles, all of Missouri; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial luncheon is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at a family friend’s home in Modesto.
McGuire Cremation and Funeral Service in Modesto is handling arrangements.
