Dean was a U.S. Army Air Corps World War II veteran, serving from Nov 18 1940 to Jan 12 1946.⁵ On Nov 18 1940 Dean O. Hinshaw, born 1920 in Illinois, enlisted in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a private in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He declared he had 3 years of college and was single, without dependents.⁷ Note that brother Donald enlisted on the same day.

He married Martha Jean Huffer.^8,9,10 Martha, daughter of Ralph Craig Huffer & Ruth Marian Guy, was born Jun 19 1921, Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan.^3,8

Dean's obituary was published in the "Iron County Reporter" (Iron River, Michigan) on May 19 1999.¹¹
